Sparta/WS Upsets Onalaska 4-3 in Sectional FInal

Luke Tepp fights off Sparta/WS defender in Sectional Final Game

Sparta/WS played with real emotion, and came out fast and physical in Friday nights Section 4 Final at Viroqua. The Spartans took a 1 goal lead at the 9:48 mark of the 1st, capitalizing on a Hilltopper turnover. Onalaska would have a couple marginal chances, but the Sparta/WS defenders did a good job deflecting shots.  1st period ended with shots at 6-6.

In the 2nd period Ian Earp had a break away stopped.  Onalaska’s Jesse Tredinnick misses on a golden opportunity shooting the puck across the crease behind the Sparta/WS goal tender. Both teams would have numerous scoring opportunites.  Ona killed 2 penalties in the period.

Sparta would take a 2-0 lead at the 5:49 mark of the 3rd on a goal in front by Knoll. Ona’s Tredinnick, finally gets Onalaska on the board on a ppg at 8:13. Tredinnick takes a pass from Caleb Blank, and walks it in front going 5-hole on Sparta/WS goalie Grosskopf. :46 seconds later, Sparta/WS makes it a 3-1 game when Burdick scores one in front. Tredinnick would make it a 2-3 game :11 seconds later, bouncing the puck in off the Sparta/WS goalies leg from behind the net. Sparta’s Tyler Gorniak snipes a goal when he whips an unexpected shot in at the 16:13 mark for a 4-2 lead. Many thought game over at this point, but Keaton Bronston made it interesting walking one down the middle and scoring at the 16:37 mark. Sparta/WS would hold off by icing the puck, then winning the next face off and controlling the puck to pick up the win, and a trip to State. Scott Sibik had 24 saves for Onalaska, Sparta/WS’s Grosskopf stopped 31.

Onalaska finishes the season 20-5.

Congrats to the Players and Coaches for a great season! We has some really impressive wins, and one of the best records in OHS Hockey.
